Debate rages over Endeavour discovery claims

Maritime archaeologists Keiran Hosty and James Hunter claim the English-built Endeavour lies on the seabed off Newport Rhode Island on America's east coast, where it ended up after its voyage down under.

The vessel, which was used as a transport ship, was eventually stripped and scuttled by the English during the American Revolution when there were fears it was going to be captured by the republicans.

There are many wrecks in Newport Harbour, so Mr Hosty and Mr Hunter said they needed something definitive to find Endeavour.

But then they said a document was discovered which narrowed down their search to five ships at that site – with just one of the five ticking the boxes.

"It's taken us 22 years to get to this point," Mr Hosty said.
