'He was just one of us': The incredible legacy a Sydney man left for a charity

Malcolm Mawhinney lived a simple life - he loved cricket and helping the homeless.

Once a week for 10 years he volunteered at the Bill Crews' Exodus Foundation - a charity that helps the homeless and vulnerable.

"You never knew how much he had earned, or where he came from or what he did, but you had an idea he was a bit of a battler," Reverand Bill Crews said.

"He was just a really lovely, kind, man and in an ironic way, he didn't look much different to one of our guests so you know he was just one of us, one of us."

But when Malcolm died in 2021, no one knew he was sitting on a gold mine – nor did anyone expect what he did with his fortune.
