We all know the pain of rising insurance premiums.

But what if your home policy was set to rise by 400 per cent - more than the value of your mortgage repayments.

That’s the sad spreadsheet facing some cash-strapped families.

Charleville resident Jillian braced when she went to renew the insurance on her home, knowing it had probably gone up.

But she never expected it would come in at more than $43,000.

“I would rather they just said ‘no, look it’s unaffordable in your area’ than tell me that because it’s rude,” she said.

In an Australian-first, Jillian and others in her position are joining forces with councils to combat sky-high premiums.
