'Desperately waiting': Families brace for tough Christmas after rates hold

Rachel Green is a married mother of one with another baby on the way.

After she and her husband pay all their bills, including their mortgage, they are left with less than $60 spending money each week.

Like many, they were hoping today's Reserve Bank decision would give them a little bit of leeway.

But the RBA left rates on hold for the ninth time in its last meeting of the year.

It's now tipped a rates cut won't come until May next year.

"[We're] just sort of struggling through, just desperately waiting," Green said.
