A Sydney man has been charged with poisoning his wife's tea in a chilling and bizarre case of alleged domestic violence.

Last month, Stephan Wagner's wife Glenda became seriously ill after drinking tea which was allegedly laced with insecticides.

Police will allege Wagner used common insecticide Ant-Rid to poison his wife's tea over a period of two years.

The woman's family alerted police after taking samples of her urine and her tea, finding the poison boron, which is present in Ant-Rid.

Symptoms of Ant-Rid poisoning can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Wagner has been charged with a range of poisoning offences including intention to murder.

He was remanded in custody and will face court again in December.
