How Aussie parents can implement a world-first social media ban with kids under 16

When the federal government announced a social media ban for kids under 16, it was music to the ears of parents.

Now the world-first legislation has cleared another hurdle after a trial of age verification technology.

Experts believe it's an important step to protect kids, but some children and teenagers aren't welcoming the prospect of a legislation change as early as December.

A Current Affair spoke to parenting expert Dr Justin Coulson about how to get kids off social media without a fight.

"I think that this is where parents have to do some parenting," Coulson said.

"As we help them to understand the rationale behind the legislation ... as we guide them towards an understanding of their lost potential, and the possibilities that exist outside of the screen, ideally more children will actually get onboard and see some value in this."
