Fed-up grandma's unique solution for potholes after slow council response

Armed with a spray can in each hand and ducking for cover, 76-year-old Jenny Hartich doesn't fit the mould of a street artist or an elite commando.

Yet the graffitiing grandma has saved motorists thousands of dollars in repairs by spraying quaint pictures around potholes.

The high-visibility drawings act as an early warning system and a reminder to her council to fix the holes.

When asked by A Current Affair if she's been "bitumen" and moaning about the potholes for years, Hartich chuckled and replied, "no, I've been fixing it, doing it and getting it done, getting them filled".

While passersby stop to thank the "pothole lady" for looking out for them, unfortunately the NSW Central Coast Council has banned Hartich from getting her spray cans out because of safety reasons.

"They didn't want to see me splattered on the road," she said.

The ban comes amid what has been deemed a pothole pandemic.

NRMA Insurance said since July 1, it's attended 54,182 breakdowns specifically for tyre and wheel damage in NSW and the ACT.

That's a 70 per cent increase on the same time last year.

Heavy rain and floods aren't helping, but recent law changes mean it's much more difficult to make insurance claims against local governments for their failure to maintain roads.
