FBI-trained criminal profiler and behavioural threat analyst Kris Illingsworth has studied the shootings with an expert eye.

She spoke to A Current Affair about the pathway to targeted violence, what comes next, and what we can all do to stop terror in our country.

"I think there's a risk of the contagion effect, where others might be inspired by this," she said.

"I think I would be choosing my locations carefully in the coming days and weeks and months.

"Because this is a collective effort to maintain safety and regain that sense of safe climate for us to live and be a bit more security aware."
