'We don't believe in homework': Families under the microscope on Parental Guidance

Eight families, eight very different parenting styles.

From active parents who value sports over school, to authoritative parents who have very high expectations for their children, the new season of Parental Guidance is packed with personal and emotional stories.

The power pair of Ally Langdon and Dr Justin Coulson will guide parents through eye-opening challenges centred on screen time, mental health, body image and social pressures.

A Current Affair was given a behind-the-scenes look.

"We have opinions flying left, right and centre, and it's good conversation," Langdon said.

"The thing about the show and why people love it is because we all want to be the best possible parent that we can be.

"We all, at times, think that we're having great wins, and we also have things when we know we could just be better."

Courtney and John are "pro-tech" parents.

"Pro-tech parenting is about educating your children through the use of technology," Courtney said.

"I think a lot of people see devices as a cop-out or an easy way out of parenting, and that's not the case, so I'm looking forward to rebutting that," John said.

Hassan, a "hard way" parent, sees things a little differently.

"I grew up in a household where I had unlimited access to screen time, and to be honest, it affected me as a person," he said.

"It made me anti-social. It took me away from that world. And we made a decision together that when we have kids, (we were) not going to do that."

Parental Guidance will explore the tough topics with the help of experts.

"Honestly, can you imagine holding a mirror up to yourself in front of the entire nation?" Coulson asked.

"The courage of these families allows us to have conversations that are literally life-changing."

Parental Guidance hits TV screens on Monday at 7.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.
