Statement from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has been providing consular assistance to Stephen Richardson’s family and takes this role very seriously.
Laws and legal processes vary in other countries and ultimately Indonesian police are responsible for conducting the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Richardson.
Consular officials from the Australian Consulate-General in Bali continue to check with Indonesian police on the progress of their investigation but have no authority to intervene in local judicial matters or conduct local investigations.
