‘He’ll do whatever he has to do’: The dodgy builder accused of leaving victims and exes in the lurch

Unlicensed builder Dee Meyers is facing accusations of leaving a trail of financial devastation across Australia’s east coast, with claims he ripped off home owners and ex-girlfriends alike.

The 66-year-old from Queensland allegedly used fake credentials on Facebook to secure building jobs, including two decks and a pergola for Port Macquarie resident John Rogers in 2023.

When the structure leaked and independent assessors deemed it a “tear-down job”, Rogers confronted Meyers, who claimed he could not finish the build because his lung and throat cancer had spread to his brain. A Current Affair does not suggest that Meyers did not have lung or throat cancer.

“It didn’t go down well ... he got very aggressive,” Rogers said.

Despite a Civil and Administrative Tribunal order mandating Meyers pay $14,000 in compensation to Rogers, the home owner has not received a single cent.

“I think he’ll do whatever he has to do to get the money and survive,” Rogers told A Current Affair.

Meyers is also accused of emotional and financial exploitation by former partners, including a woman who met him on a dating app in 2024.

Sue* claims Meyers convinced her to hand over her credit card while waiting for a fictitious $3 million inheritance to mature, racking up $32,000 in personal expenses over five months.

“Everything that comes out of his mouth is a lie,” she told A Current Affair.

She also claims Meyers told elaborate stories, boasting he was related to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and had surfed professionally against Mick Fanning.

When confronted by A Current Affair in NSW, Meyers denied all allegations, claiming he never wrote the cancer text messages and did not owe money.

“I’ve done nothing wrong,” he told A Current Affair.

Shortly after the confrontation, he vacated his rental property, allegedly telling his landlord he was returning to Queensland because his cancer had spread to his bowel.
