Dave received two fines for the same offence. He’s going to court to try to fix it

Dave Dwyer has always prided himself on being a careful driver, so when he received two fines for speeding, he was frustrated with himself.

But when he looked closer at them, he noticed something wasn’t right.

“Initially I thought, you know, like, have I exceeded the limit again on the trip unintentionally? And then I realised it was exactly the same date and time,” he said.

The fines were written up for the same time on the same day, and at the same location where Dwyer drives between Western Sydney and the NSW South Coast.

The difference, one clocked him at 84km/h, and the other had him driving 96km/h.

He claimed the police officer didn’t tell him what speed he was travelling, and when he went to Revenue NSW to have the situation resolved, it only got more complicated.

“The State Revenue responded by cancelling one of the fines, but they cancelled the lower fine and kept the higher fine,” he claimed. 

“How can it be accurate if you've literally got two fines issued at exactly the same time?”

Frustrated and feeling like he is out of options, Dwyer is now going to court.

This isn’t without risk of its own and it could lead to a heftier fine and a criminal record.
