It may be called Progress Street, but locals in suburban Melbourne claim plans to close the road in and out of a bustling industrial hub will only bank up traffic.

A pledge to remove 110 level crossings across the state usually sees outdated boom gates removed and traffic re-diverted through an underpass or an overpass.

But in Dandenong South, the main road into a busy estate will simply become a dead end.
