An infectious diseases expert has warned Australians not to be complacent as COVID-19 spreads through communities across the country in the lead-up to Christmas.

Dr Paul Griffin told A Current Affair as transmission spreads, it is important for people to get the response right.

"If we remain complacent and don't take any steps to reduce this wave, then we could see COVID-19 impact our holiday season," he said.

While Dr Griffin said the new Majestic Princess cruise ship outbreak in Sydney is significant, he believes it isn't on the same scale of the Ruby Princess in 2020, thanks to vaccinations.

However, he encourages people to continue wearing masks, keeping their distance and getting boosters to safeguard their Christmas holidays this year.
