Former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett calls for council tasked with combatting crisis to 'resign en masse'

Former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett has called on the state's appointed Crisis Council of Cabinet to resign for the sake of "sheer self-decency".

In April, the Victorian state government set up the council with the express purpose of combatting the coronavirus crisis, appointing eight state ministers.

"They should all resign en masse. They have failed this state," Mr Kennett said of the council.

The former premier, however, assured he isn't calling for any resignations yet, but rather once the current outbreak in the state is under control.

"I think the public will demand that heads roll, but not right now. Our first priority is containing the coronavirus."

Mr Kennett also criticised the Daniel Andrews government for implying the public was to blame for the second wave.

"The failure hasn't been the public, the failure has been the government," Mr Kennett said.

"The buck always stops with the politicians."

The hotel quarantine breaches, which have largely been blamed for Melbourne's outbreak, are now the subject of a judicial enquiry. Mr Kennett claims the government is using this as a form of "cover-up" and as a way of avoiding answering questions about the breach.

"We're not even getting answers now when people are being locked up. It's unacceptable."
