QR Check-Ins worry cyber security and tech experts amid COVID-19

Cyber security and tech experts have a warning for Australians who are being asked to check in to café's and restaurant with QR codes.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, people are being asked to hand over their personal information before entering a premises' due to restrictions, in order to keep others safe from the virus, through contact tracing.

While signing in with a QR code may have become the new normal, some are questioning whether our details are safe.

Tech expert Stephen Fenech says most of us are now doing the opposite of what we might have been taught about protecting our personal information.

"We're all taught to protect our personal information and we're handing them over in a café," Mr Fenech told A Current Affair.

While cyber security expert Nick Savvides says there are people out there who would be interested in using the pandemic as an excuse to scam innocent Aussies.

"It actually is very enticing to a cyber-criminal to get a hold of," Mr Savvides told A Current Affair.
