'If you're a thief, we're gonna catch ya': Supermarket's new security measures

Coles is rolling out bold new security technology to crack down on brazen shoplifters.

"If you're a thief, we're gonna catch ya," Coles' Chief Operations Officer Matt Swindells told A Current Affair.

Thanks to cameras, trolley locks, smart gates and even fog machines, it is now almost impossible to swindle the supermarket.

All of the new technology is a bid by the supermarket to tackle a 20 per cent rise in crime at the supermarket.

"We've never invested more and be more focused on catching the wide range of thieves that are doing the wrong thing," Swindells said.

It isn't just about protecting products; the supermarket is now rolling out body-worn cameras and duress watches for staff to increase safety measures.

Coles isn't alone in the rollout of these security measures - Woolworths has done the same with both smart gates and body-worn cameras.
