'Buyer's Christmas' as retailers push excess stock

With Aussie shoppers expected to spend $9 billion throughout Christmas week, all eyes will be on deals and discounts at stores across the country.
National Retail Association Director Rob Godwin said it will be a "buyer's Christmas".
"Retailers are really in quite a unique situation in that they have a lot of stock, so they're coming into the Christmas period and the Boxing Day sales and they're carrying a large amount of inventory," Godwin said.
"So there are a lot of bargains to be had for consumers."

He said the excess stock was due to an over-confidence from retailers earlier in the year.
"They've bought considerable stock for anticipated sales and to some degree, in certain areas of the economy, they haven't delivered.
"So therefore we're in a situation now where this Christmas period, and Boxing Day and through to the new year is really a buyer's Christmas with excess stock being available."
Godwin said retailers have seen a contraction in consumer spending recently, due to cost of living pressures.
But the retail sector has seen a surge in purchases of toys, electronics, travel accessories and beauty products.
