Beloved Aussie-made breakfast spread's 'surprising' price in London supermarkets

There's no food more Australian than Vegemite. It's made in Melbourne and shipped around the world. So why does it cost more here, than overseas?

A Current Affair paid a visit to Tesco in London to price check the salty spread and learned it's about 15 per cent cheaper than Australia.

At Coles, the 220g jar of Vegemite jar is $5, or $2.27 per 100g.

More than 15,000 kilometres away, at Tesco in London, the 220g jar is £2.20 or about $4.28.

Per 100g, you pay the equivalent of $1.95 at Tesco versus the $2.27 at Coles.

While at Woolworths, they sell a 280g jar of Vegemite for $6.20, or $2.21 per 100g grams.

Former ACCC commissioner, Professor Allan Fells, is putting the Vegemite vex down to little competition between Aussie manufacturers — it's only produced in one place.

"It's really surprising that it's far cheaper in London, because there are shipping costs and all that but because of competition, UK consumers pay much less," he told A Current Affair.

"If there's competition between suppliers, if there's a lot of them, that keeps the price down, but there's only one producer of Vegemite," Fells said.

When we approached Woolworths for a statement, they said: "Food manufacturers like Bega may have different pricing strategies in other markets."

Coles chose not to comment.
