Families face new and 'terrifying' challenges in new season of Parental Guidance

This year, Parental Guidance is putting families through all-new challenges to see just what parents need to know in this brave new world.

The role of technology caused the biggest headaches for parents like Kat Taylor this season.

Taylor is among 12 parents who shared their parenting styles in season two of Parental Guidance, which is hosted by A Current Affair's own Ally Langdon and parenting expert Justin Coulson.

Taylor's daughter, Billy, was put to the test in episode one, challenging kids on what they know about online safety.

Billy eventually revealed her street address to a stranger online.

"The results are staggering and frankly they're terrifying," Coulson said.

The challenge was set up with the help of the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation.

AFP Detective Superintendent Jayne Crossling said while many parents warn children about stranger danger, when it is online it is far harder for kids to judge.

"There's a lot more deception involved. When it's online, it's easier to pretend to be somebody that you're not," Crossling said.

She warned that even in games appropriate for children, predators have been known to trawl.

She said it's important that parents are mindful of whether the game chat functionality is switched on.

Coulson said parenting is an ever-evolving skill which he argues his style, in his new book, is the best of all of them.

"It's a parenting style that supports our kids' basic psychological needs and in doing so it sets them up to try to flourish," Coulson said.

Taylor said her family conversations have grown since she went on the show.

"I've taken away some things from other different parenting styles that maybe I hadn't incorporated in mine previously," she said.

"I'd forgotten how dangerous the world is and that there's people out there that make a profession out of grooming children."

The brand new season of Parental Guidance will premiere on Monday, June 5 on Channel 9 and 9Now.
