The operation to vaccinate international sailors in Australian waters

Since the start of the pandemic, authorities have gone to great lengths to try and keep COVID-19 out for the country.

But one local GP has gone an extra step in protecting our borders and has given A Current Affair exclusive access to have a look at his vaccine operation.

Western Sydney GP Dr Jamal Rifi is delivering jabs into the arms of international sailors.

He visited 13 unvaccinated Myanmar crew as they arrived in Sydney waters on board a Hong Kong-flagged pioneer ship. The vessel arrived from Singapore with a cargo full of sugar.

COVID-19 vaccinations haven't been available for some ship crews in their own countries, so the team onboard were upbeat to be given the jab.

"Everyone who is coming from overseas, if we can get them vaccinated it will be much safer for all of us and if they can't get a vaccine in their original country at least they should get the vaccination in Australia," Dr Rifi said.

This is one of several visits Dr Rifi and his team will make to the ship to vaccinate crew members.

"I know it'll make them a lot safer; it'll also protect their community and if we do a little bit extra and a combined effort, we will have a safer nation," he said.
