Calls for recycling facility to be shut down over 'unbearable' smell

Aussie families living in western Sydney claim a bad smell from a nearby recycling facility has been holding them hostage in their own homes for the last two weeks. 

Minchinbury resident of 33 years, Carl Howard, said he's had enough of the stench which he suspects is coming from Bingo's recycling facility in nearby Eastern Creek.

"It's just getting unbearable at times," he told A Current Affair.

"It's more, predominantly in the morning. When you first get up … you can smell it when you open the front door.

"You can't come outside when the wind is in a certain direction. It's not right."

Earlier this year, the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) were led to the recycling facility.

Infrared cameras pinpointed the smell to the depths of the dump.

While no one would go on camera, the company denies it has anything to do with the return of the repulsive stench.

It said it recently spent $5 million to eliminate the odour, after rotten smelling gas was found forming in its landfill.

"I think they need to spend another $5 million if this is the result of what they have spent," Mr Howard said.

"They need to live here - the executives. They're most welcome to stay here any time."

Another nearby resident Flipe Castro said the stench "smells like a dead rat - like sewage" and that it is "very bad".

He urged the facility to "think about the little ones going through it".

Mr Castro's partner Michelle Torrico said the smell wafting into their home is "yuck" and said people in the area, especially those with children, are suffering because of it.

"Kids and stuff ... they want to go out and play. But they can't," she said.

"This is our home. We don't want to move because of a smell."

Families in the area have been rallying for 18 months to have the stench eliminated.

"If they can't resolve the odour issue - then there is no other option than to shut them down until they resolve it," Mount Druitt MP, Edmond Atalla said.

Mr Atalla has taken their fight to the parliament floor.

"It's not acceptable that every time it rains the odour comes out and effects the residents," he said.

"I've had over 300 complaints to my office."

He's now calling for more action by the EPA.

"Bingo's license actually prohibits them from omitting any odours. So once the odours have been emitted, infringement notices should be issued," Mr Atalla said.

The EPA has confirmed that it's received a few complaints and has sent out officers to investigate.

But its odour survey has come up odour free and Bingo has come out smelling of roses.

So, the big question is: Where is this putrid pong coming from then?

"The standard response is 'we are still investigating'. How long does it take to investigate what the cause of the odour is?" Mr Atalla asked.

The EPA said it will continue to monitor the situation over the holiday break that its investigation into potential breaches at the Bingo Eastern Creek landfall is ongoing.
