Aussie business duo claim they have the answer to avoid smelly socks

An Aussie duo claim they have the answer when it comes to avoiding smelly socks.

Business partners Nathan and Rex Zhang said they initially began making their own socks, which are shaped just like the heel of the foot, to avoid fabric slipping.

"The problem with my old socks is they got cold, they got holes in them, they smell really bad, and they fell off my heels," Nathan told A Current Affair.

But according to the Paire business owners, the seamless toes also stop itching, and they promise no more blisters or bad smells.

And the team said the answer is all in their fabric.

"What we did is blended wool and cotton into one yarn and that holds all the best features of cotton and wool. And that's what makes the biggest difference in our socks," Nathan said.

Rex's family has been manufacturing textiles for 30 years, with customers like Gucci and Ralph Lauren.

He said their new fabric is temperature regulating and anti-bacterial.

"You can wear these socks for three days in a row without washing them," Rex said.

So A Current Affair put the socks to the test.

The sock test

Runners from the Sydney Striders club all wore one regular sock and one Paire sock for a five-kilometre run.

And one of the world's best noses - master of wine Rob Geddes - had the task of sniffing them all following their run.

After their run, one of the runners said their Paire socks "were holding a lot of the moisture, so it didn't feel as slippery to me".

Geddes said, "it smells clean like clean feet. Not mushroomy" about the same runner's Paire sock.

However, when it came to the normal sock, Geddes said "this is more grapefruity, like a human's been in it".

Geddes had a whiff of another runner's Paire sock and said, "they're clean" and "that smells great actually".

He added: "The Paire socks have less aroma, from the shoe and from the runner. The more artificial fibres are much more cold and damp".

When it came to the normal socks Geddes said "they smell mouldier".

Nathan also tested which sock absorbs more moisture.

Rex wore one Paire sock and one standard sock.

"The regular sock absorbed two grams of water," Nathan said.

"This is the Paire sock … barely any water … the scale didn't even change, that's exactly what we want to see."
