After 37 years at the helm of the world's fashion bible, Anna Wintour is stepping aside at Vogue.

She'll remain in charge globally and as chief content officer of media company Conde Nast, which also oversees Vanity Fair and GQ.

But Wintour's legacy lies in transforming the magazine into a cultural institution.

"Her influence on global fashion has really been about pushing commerciality, pushing celebrity and really making fashion part of the mainstream," Sydney Morning Herald and The Age fashion editor Damien Woolnough said.
