Change donor rules?

Following an independent review commissioned by the Blood Service in 2017, the TGA is anticipating the Blood Service to request changes to donor deferral requirement for some groups of donors. The TGA will assess the information provided to ensure continued compliance with safety standards. Assessment of the submission will be conducted by specialist scientific evaluators and medical practitioners in the TGA, informed by advice from external infectious disease experts.

No submission to change the deferral period has yet been made to the TGA and the timing of any such submission is at the discretion of the Blood Service, however a submission is anticipated by the end of 2019. The TGA will seek advice from the Advisory Committee on Biologicals prior to making a decision on any changes to deferrals for donors whose sexual practices put them at increased risk of infection.
