Grocery giants slash prices in lead up to Christmas

Thousands of groceries have been discounted by up to 50 percent as Coles and Woolworths go head to head for your supermarket dollar in the lead up to Christmas.

Coles has slashed the price of more than 1000 products since the beginning of this year, while Woolworths have cut prices on 1500 products.

“We look at the products our customers buy most of and see where we can cut prices, just to help them save that bit of money each week,” Martine Alpins from Coles told A Current Affair.

Customer favourite, regular three-star mince is $7 per kilogram, down from $8, and RSPCA approved chicken thighs will set you back just $2.50 per kilogram.

Holiday favourites Cadbury Roses and Lindt chocolates have been reduced by 50 percent.

Potato chips are down 37 percent and San Remo pasta is 25 percent off.

The discounts are not confined to the food aisles, however, with savings to be had across cleaning products and other household items.

“No one likes cleaning dishes but great news is prices have come down on dishwashing tablets, both on big brands like Finish and Fairy, by more than 25 percent,” Ms Alpins said.

While Woolworths has gained momentum over Coles with greater growth in food sales over the past three months – it continues to lower prices on household essentials.

From tomorrow morning chocolate, potato chips, washing powder, toilet paper, washing powder and some skin care products will all be 50 percent off.

Pork mince is down $2 from $13 per kilogram to $11, while the price of salmon has been reduced by $5.

Parents can save on baby wipes too, with the price of a 384 Huggies bulk pack down to $16.

Aldi is also lowering prices in the lead up to Christmas and proved to have the best value for money in our secret shopper experiment between the three stores.

Retail expert Nancy Georgess said the increased competition from Aldi, Costco and Lidl has changed the game.

“We keep hearing our prices are getting lower, lower, lower. Maybe for Christmas, we’re going to get a nice basket of shopping for free, because that’s as low as they can go!” she said.
