Fire crews rushed to a blaze in Milperra last night. (9NEWS)

A 73-year-old woman is fighting for her life after being pulled from her burning home in Milperra yesterday.

The house in Bullecourt Avenue was well alight when firefighters arrived about 6.30pm, and battled through smoke to find the woman in her kitchen.

“The smoke was right down to the floor so trying to conduct search and rescue in those conditions was challenging,”  NSW Fire and Rescue Inspector Trent Lawrence said.

“We were able to find the woman quite quickly.”

Neighbours rushed to the woman's aid.

"We banged and banged on the door to try and get her out, telling her to come to the door if she could," Laura Goddard said.

"It was terrible because we couldn't get in."

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

A crime scene was established to determine the cause of the blaze.
