The Hollywood star has been charged with the 2021 fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust.

In an exclusive interview to be broadcast on 60 Minutes on Sunday, special effects co-ordinator Thomas Gandy describes the events that led to the death of his colleague.

"This one crack, it was so, so loud," he says.

Hutchins was less than a metre away from Baldwin's belt buckle when he heard the gun shot.

"I feared the worst immediately," Gandy told reporter Amelia Adams.

Weapons specialist Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was also charged with involuntary manslaughter along with Baldwin.

They would be prosecuted for what authorities have described as a pattern of criminal disregard for safety.

Industry insiders interviewed on 60 Minutes say cost cutting efforts have led to safety protocols being relaxed, or at times ignored.

"You don't bring live ammunition on set," armourer Sarge Rasmussen said.
