Belgian backpacker chained up in filthy South Australian pig shed breaks her silence

It sounds like the plot of a horror movie.

A 24-year-old Belgian backpacker kidnapped by a monster, chained up like an animal and held prisoner in a filthy pig shed.

The young woman’s horrific ordeal in regional South Australia is nothing short of terrifying –lured to the outback by a depraved madman.

This Sunday on 60 Minutes, Belgian backpacker Davine speaks out for the very first time about the torment she suffered at the hands of her Australian kidnapper – and how she outsmarted and escaped an evil predator.

“I thought, ‘This is it. This is where I'm going to die,’” Davine tells reporter Tara Brown in an emotional interview.

“You don't want to die somewhere - not like that. Not there in the middle of nowhere.”

In February 2017, Davine journeyed to South Australia with the promise of a job doing farm work – a requirement to obtain a second-year Australian visa.

She had answered an online job advertisement from a man who went by ‘Max’, claiming Davine would be rearing calves on a farm with other backpackers like herself.

But ‘Max’ was in fact 54-year-old Gene Bristow – a farmer with an evil, calculated plan to hold a backpacker hostage for his own sadistic pleasure.

Bristow took Davine to a filthy pig shed on his rural property before he attacked her and shackled her with metal chains.

“He was like ‘Stop moving, stay still.’ But I wouldn’t let him,” Davine reveals.

“I was struggling and he put something against my back. He said it was a gun.”

Davine was held captive and subject to depraved abuse at the hands of Gene Bristow. During the worst moments, she feared she would never see her family or friends again.

“I thought it was over,” she told Brown.

But the 24-year-old backpacker was determined she wouldn’t die.

For the first time, 60 Minutes retraces the steps of the depraved Gene Bristow, revealing the full extent of Davine’s remarkable courage and strength to outsmart the man determined to torture her.
