Teen boy charged with murder over Darwin stabbing death

A 15-year-old boy has appeared in the Darwin Youth Justice Court charged with murder.

Police allege a fight broke out between the boy and another 15-year-old in the Bagot community just before 3.30am yesterday.

When officers arrived, the victim was unconscious and bleeding heavily after he was allegedly stabbed in the chest.

It's believed the victim was not from the Bagot community and it's unclear how he and the alleged offender knew each other. Tributes have been flowing on social media, with many saying "rest in peace" and another, "such a young life lost". Today the defendant's lawyer made no application for bail.

The court was adjourned until July 1 while it waits for pathology and toxicology reports to arrive.

"The brief (of evidence) has to be provided by that date, but noting that the reports are likely not to be back by that date," Presiding Judge Sue Oliver said.

Defence lawyer Beth Wild asked Judge Oliver not to make any orders as her client was happy with how he was being managed and did not want to be marked "at risk" at the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

"I ask your honour to make no orders and allow Territory Families workers to do their job and look after (him) as they see fit," Ms Wild said.

The judge agreed that would be appropriate, saying: "I'm not going to make an at risk order for you, you seem to be okay with the way in which you are being managed in care."

"If there is any concern, I'm sure that the people there will take care of that."

The accused shouted "I love you" to his father, who was in court for the proceedings.

He was remanded in custody and will reappear for a preliminary examination mention on July 1.
